Why Baker’s Bend is a Must-Visit?
Getting There: The Nonperial Road Adventure
If you plan on traveling by personal vehicle , the drive from Colombo to Belihuloya takes around 4 to 5 hours, covering approximately 170 kilometres. You can take the A4 Highway and pass through the beautiful towns of Ratnapura and Balangoda. Most of the time when you are on the way to Belihuloya, you will have to leave behind all the noises of the town and see lovely mountains and lots of greenery all around.
For a more budget-friendly option, travellers can take the 99 Colombo-Badulla bus to Belihuloya via Balangoda. You can get off at Pambahinna and take another bus directly to Nanperial Estate. To embark on this adventure, hop on the “Balangoda – Nonperial” bus, numbered 469, which departs from Pabahinna at 9 a.m. daily. While the narrow, winding roads can feel intimidating at first, rest assured, the local bus drivers have extensive experience navigating these paths safely. For a more comfortable experience, avoid sitting next to the window, as overhanging tree branches may brush against the bus due to the narrow lanes.
Your first stop will be at R/B/Vivegananda Vidyalaya, the Nonperial bus stop in Belihuloya. From here, you’ll have until 3 p.m. to explore and return to the bus stop to catch the bus back to Pabahinna. Missing the bus means a long trek back, so it’s advisable to manage your time wisely! If you’re fortunate enough to encounter the local tea leaf transporters, they might give you a lift, which can save you some time and energy as you continue uphill. It’s a fun, authentic experience that gives you a chance to travel like a local!
