Uncover the Beauty of Samanalawewa in Just One Day!
Take a break from the busy streets of Colombo and spend a day exploring the hidden gem of Samanalawewa. Known for its peaceful surroundings and stunning views, this spot is perfect for anyone who loves nature or a bit of adventure.
To make the most of your day, it’s best to leave Colombo early in the morning. You have a few travel options: you can take the Colombo-Badulla bus (Route No. 99) for about LKR 800–1,200 per person and get off at Pambahinna Junction, then continue your journey by either taking a bus to Kumbalgama or hiring a tuk-tuk. Alternatively, for a more comfortable experience, you can opt for a private vehicle, which costs around LKR 8,000–10,000 for the entire trip. The drive takes about 4 to 5 hours, offering beautiful and ever-changing scenery along the way.
Explore Samanalawewa’s Highlights
Once you arrive, start your day by visiting the Samanalawewa Reservoir. The calm waters and surrounding hills create a picture-perfect scene, especially in the soft morning light. Nearby, the Samanalawewa Dam is also worth visiting, as it’s an important part of the area’s landscape.
Next, head to the Viewpoint, where you can enjoy wide, panoramic views of the reservoir and the greenery around it. This is a great spot for photos or just to relax and take in the beauty. Before leaving, don’t miss Hirikatu Oya, located 10 km from Samanalawewa. To get there, you can either take the Kumbalgama bus or a tuk-tuk and get off near the Bank of Ceylon (Sabaragamuwa University branch). From there, walk a few steps forward to find a small road called Wallawwaththa Road. Follow this road to reach Hirikatu Oya, a peaceful stream ideal for resting and enjoying the soothing sounds of flowing water.
Where to Eat
You have several options when it comes to food. You could pack a picnic and enjoy it in a scenic spot, or visit one of the local restaurants. Popular choices include the Belihuloya Rest House, located 13 km from Samanalawewa, where you can dine by the river, and Sadagiri Walawwa Restaurant, 20 km away, which offers traditional cuisine. For something quicker, Pearl Restaurant in Belihuloya (12 km away) and The Gamunu Watch (also 12 km from Samanalawewa) are great options for a simple yet tasty meal.
Best Time to Visit
The ideal time to visit Samanalawewa is between December and March, when the weather is clear and you can fully enjoy the outdoors. If you love sunsets, try to plan your day so you can catch the beautiful colours of the setting sun reflected on the reservoir.
Important Tips
Remember to bring essentials like sunblock, plenty of water, and comfortable shoes, as some paths can be uneven. Be sure to check the weather before your trip, especially if you’re visiting during the rainy season, as the trails may become slippery. If you’re traveling with elderly visitors or people with limited mobility, most of the main areas are easy to access, but some of the trails are a bit steep. A guide can help make the trip easier and more enjoyable.
Heading Back
As the day ends, it’s time to make your way back to Colombo. If you have time, stop for dinner along the way. Expect to spend around LKR 800–1,500 per person for a good meal. In total, this day trip to Samanalawewa will cost about LKR 2,100–4,000 per person—a small price for a day filled with natural beauty, peace, and adventure.
